One of the things we (Hari and Sam) love most about Carterton is how connected everything feels. Great coffee, dark skies, local food, gardens, books, cycling, community, it is all close by in our unique town that has a strong community focus.
Gardens and inspiration
One of my regular places to visit is the Clareville Nursery.
Whether searching for inspiration for my European-style garden at home or exploring ideas for the native Moon garden at Star Safari, I love seeing the changing combinations of plants and seasonal colour.
Bread Worth the Detour
Just down the road, another Clareville institution is a favourite temptation for both of us: Clareville Bakery.
Known across the Wairarapa for its exceptional breads and pastries, the bakery has already earned praise from fellow local business owner Matt from Plyguy — and we agree completely. The bread selection is fantastic. It’s definitely a place where your good intentions get tested.
Books, Coffee & Curiosity
Books are another shared passion, which makes Almo’s Books a regular stop.
From astronomy and space science to gardening, interiors and design, Steve always seems to have something unexpected waiting on the shelves. We’ve picked up everything from space and astronomy books to gardening and home styling books there. The café inside makes it even harder to leave quickly.
Exploring Carterton by Bike
Recently, we have taken up cycling and say Carterton has become the perfect place to explore on two wheels.
Quiet roads, beautiful scenery and easy access to surrounding areas have made biking another way to experience the region more slowly and intentionally. We’ve had the entire Carterton area as our biking place lately and it’s been fantastic.
When it comes to winding down, Urlar is another standout.
Known for its wines, atmosphere and dark sky setting, it has also become a natural connection point during Carterton Space Week and local astronomy events.
Favourite Food Stop
And for food, one place we keep coming back to is Kainga Eatery. Kainga has a fantastic selection of food — my favourite is the omelette, and Sam loves the creamy mushrooms.
