Most months on the Go Carterton Business Spotlight, the microphone is handed to a local business owner. Conversations unfold over coffee at Wild Oats as guests share the stories behind their businesses — the challenges, wins, lessons and motivations that shape what they do.
In this episode, however, the format changed.
Instead of spotlighting a single business, host Josie Askin turned the focus toward Go Carterton itself — the organisation working behind the scenes to support, connect and advocate for local businesses across Carterton and the wider Wairarapa.
The result was an insightful conversation about community, collaboration and why strong local business networks matter more than ever.
What is Go Carterton?
Go Carterton is Carterton’s local business association, bringing together a diverse range of businesses from across the district. Members include retailers, tradespeople, hospitality operators, service providers, creatives, growers and professionals — all contributing to the local economy in different ways.
At its core, Go Carterton exists to help local businesses connect, collaborate and thrive.
The organisation works to strengthen relationships between businesses, advocate on issues affecting the district and help create a vibrant, resilient town centre that benefits both businesses and the wider community.
The committee itself reflects the diversity of Carterton’s business community, with members representing sectors ranging from tourism and coaching to retail and creative industries.
Why connection matters
One of the strongest themes throughout the episode was the importance of connection.
Running a business can often feel isolating, particularly for sole operators and small business owners managing everything themselves. Go Carterton’s regular Business Connect sessions were created to help address that challenge.
Held monthly at the Carterton Courthouse, these sessions give local business owners a chance to openly discuss the realities of business — from cashflow and staffing to resilience, boundaries and work-life balance.
The conversations are practical, grounded and collaborative, creating an environment where people can learn from each other and realise they are not facing challenges alone.
Alongside Business Connect, Go Carterton also hosts regular evening socials and networking events, creating opportunities for members to strengthen relationships, share ideas and support one another in a relaxed environment.
In a small town, those peer-to-peer relationships are incredibly valuable.
More Than Networking
While connection is a major focus, the episode also highlighted the broader role Go Carterton plays within the district.
The organisation maintains strong relationships with Carterton District Council and works to ensure local business voices are represented in conversations around infrastructure, economic development, transport and planning.
Go Carterton also collaborates with Business Wairarapa to help connect Carterton businesses with wider regional opportunities, events and support networks.
This advocacy work often happens quietly in the background, but it plays an important role in helping create long-term economic resilience for the district.
Bringing the Community Together
The conversation also explored the way local events can strengthen both community identity and the local economy.
One standout example is Carterton Space Week — a growing town-wide event that brings together schools, businesses, community organisations and visitors through activities ranging from water rocket launches and astronomy talks to film screenings and astrophotography.
Events like Space Week demonstrate what can happen when businesses and community groups collaborate toward a shared goal.
Go Carterton also supports and promotes a range of other community initiatives throughout the year, including Christmas events, Daffodil Day activities and regional business events such as the Wairarapa Business Awards and Business Summit.
These events not only bring people together, but also help showcase the creativity, energy and talent within the district.
Looking Ahead
Looking forward, Go Carterton’s focus remains on strengthening value for members and building even stronger collaboration across the local business community.
That includes improving communication, supporting local procurement opportunities, encouraging joint promotions and continuing to grow connections between businesses throughout the district.
The vision is simple but important:
to help Carterton remain a place where businesses can start, grow and succeed while contributing positively to the character and wellbeing of the town itself.
As this special episode demonstrated, Go Carterton is about far more than networking events or business promotion.
It is about creating a stronger local ecosystem — one built on connection, collaboration and community pride.
This conversation was originally recorded for the GoCarterton Business Spotlight series on Arrow FM, celebrating local businesses, stories and community connections across Carterton District.
